Meitnerium

Located at Group 9 and Period 7 of the periodic table is one of the radioactive man - made transition metal which not much information was known. This is Meitnerium.

First discovered and created ( not isolated, since it's a man - made element ) by a German nuclear research team named Gesellschaft für Schwerionenforschung lead by Peter Armbruster and Gottfried Münzenberg.

Because Meitnerium was newly discovered, not much information was obtained about it. However, we still know that Meitnerium was created by bombarding a Bismuth atom's target with accelerated nuclei of Iron. After that, fission happens and finally a Meitnerium atoms was created.

Similar to all man - made elements, Meitnerium was, in fact, doesn't have any stable isotopes. Its most stable ones can only hold together for only 8 seconds. Although there might be a more stable one, which can hold together for 67 seconds, but the isotopes has not yet been created.

Of course, as almost most man - made element's characteristic has, its Physical and Chemical Properties remain unknown. These properties can only be predicted and yet appearing to be not so accurate.

Physical Properties :
Not much information is known for the physical properties of Meitnerium as its half life is only 8 seconds, which is very short.

However, this is some of its predicted properties :

  • silvery - white / grey color ( predicted )
  • melting point : unknown
  • boiling point : unknown
  • very radioactive
    Radioactive Symbol
How Meitnerium got its name?
Meitnerium got its name from a Austrian Scientist called Lise Meitner, which is one of the discoverers of nuclear fission.

Uses
Generally speaking, Meitnerium has no main commercial uses. However, Meitnerium is used in labs and is predicted to be used as a part of the future technology in the future.
